My Creative Journey As A Self Taught Artist

I’m a mum to four children and a dog.  My children are 6 year old twins, a teenager and an adult!  I’ve always had a creative flare, as young as I can remember.  My earliest memory is when I was 5 and I drew my orange cat.  I was so proud of that drawing!

When I was a child I was so passionate about crafting and drawing, colouring and making.  I remember spending hours making a house of the future out of cardboard boxes, brown sticky tape and the middle of a pizza box for a table!  My hard work paid off because I entered that house into my school eisteddfod and was shocked to win 1st place!

So I’ve tried almost every craft and art supply there is! From scrapbooking, card making and jewellery making to clay making, charcoal and oil painting.

In November 2019 (a few months before the first covid19 lockdown happened, I think this was fate) I accidentally came across a really popular acrylic painted on youtube who was dolloping paint onto a canvas and then turning those dollops of paint into really cool paintings!

I instantly got myself down to the stationary shop and bought some cheap acrylic paint, some canvases and brushes and took them home to give these tutorials I’d seen on youtube a go.  Instantly I was having so much fun!  I found the tutorials so easy to follow.

I also picked up a cheap watercolour set on the off chance I might try it one day. Well I did try it and from the first go I was hooked!

Here’s one of my first youtube tutorials from March 2021 . . .

The obsession was there from the get go and I made it my mission to learn more about this fascinating medium I had never tried before . . .

So I started watching youtube videos on the basics of using watercolour and I ended up consuming hours and hours of video on tips, hacks, art supplies and step by step painting tutorials.  I still consume at least one video a day three 1/2 years into my painting journey.

Here are some of my fav watercolour artists I learned from:

Louise De Masi

Emily Olson

Kirsty Partridge

As well as youtube, I found skillshare to be one of my favourite ways to learn because skillshare is an online learning library (I call it an online college) where you can learn creative skills galore, from drawing, photography, time management, photoshop, painting and more.

A subscription on skillshare is no where near the cost of going to art school or taking individual classes so I found it super affordable and well worth my while.

You can get a free 30 day trial using my link here:

Some of my favourite skillshare videos I have found very useful are:

So at the moment, I am a mum to 4 children and a dog, working from home in between walking my dog, seeing friends and family, and the all-important but never-ending housework!

I love what I do!

I get to spend my day at home, learning, painting, filming, editing and choose my own hours!

I make step by step tutorials on watercolour and gouache painting (and a bit of mixed media) to help you learn more about watercolour.  I provide tips, hacks, art recommendations and reviews and show you snippets of my working from home life as an artist.
